The famous ‘Love Ride’ was back for 2010 after the long running charity event was cancelled in 2009 due to the bad economy, so yes, I just had to go!
Swapping my beloved Sportbike for an American cruiser, I turned up on the latest trick 8Ball machine from Victory.
OK, it’s not a Harley Davidson but it is a well built American V-Twin so I’m nearly there and it was a good job I did or I could have been in trouble as just about everyone was on an American V-Twin.
The ‘Love Ride’ started in 1984 and has raised serious charity $$$ in the past, attracting up to 15,000 riders who took part when it was held at the Pomona Fairplex.
For 2010 a scaled down version was to take place and was capped at 1,000 enthusiastic bikers and named the ‘Retro’ Love Ride.
This year’s ride would start off at Glendale Harley Davidson in Los Angeles and finished up at the Calamigos Ranch in the Malibu Hills replicating the original ‘Love Ride’ from back in 1984.
Once at the ranch all entrants were treated to a hearty meal, plenty of fluids and some celebrities on the main stage.
Jay Leno was the Grand Marshal (has been since 1985!) and was joined on stage by Peter Fonda and later by Robby Krieger from the Doors who gave the large crowd something to cheer about with some brilliant Doors classics.
I have to say apart from a bit of chaos at the signing on point, the whole ride when incredibly smoothly and was a fun and eventful day out which turned out to be a total blast.
From where I was standing I saw no problems, no crashes and a lot of passionate bikers taking over the road, even better they raised a whole load of cash for Autism Speaks.
Support it if you can!
